Ice (Out?) Report

No need to sugar coat this… it's not looking good. There will be some fishable water around Sioux Lookout on opener but in my opinion, a lot of Lac Seul will be inaccessible.

Here are some pictures from the Deception boat launch, taken today (Saturday May 10), 1 week from opening day.

There's still about 8 - 12 inches of snow covering most of road.

The Deception arm is still locked up tight. The launch itself is covered with sheets of ice 16-inches thick.

I'm having serious doubts about using this launch to access much water on opener. Lost Lake (hudson launch) is going to be the same thing. Last year both lost lake and the deception arm went out the same day. Accessing the north shore (bear narrows) in my opinion, isn't going to happen for opening weekend. I know a lot of stuff on the lake is open right now (Manitou, Chamberlain etc.) because of the current, but getting there will be restricted by ice.

Sadly, the weather doesn't look favourable this week either. Highs in the 40's and lows down to freezing.

I'll get another report up later this week.

Thanks for the update. Even bad news is helpful. We are driving to Mahkwa Lodge on May 25 so we are hoping for a very warm next two weeks.

Was wondering if you can tell me what lakes around Sioux Lookout would be fishable May 19-24. Have vacation for that week and can't change it, and would still like to make the trip.

Abram, Pelican, Sturgeon River will be fishable for sure and parts of lac seul may be accessible by then. Email me a day or 2 before you leave and I'll more current information then.

Hi Ben just wondering about lakes to fish, we will be arriving May 19th. We are staying at Rivers Edge outfitters. Sounds like there is still a lot of ice. Thanks

Hi Cindy, That's just 2 days till you get here. I think you will have very limited access on Lac Seul and Minnitaki. Pelican is almost wide open, just some ice in the bays. Big V was iced up as of thursday. In my opinion most of it will go this coming week… it's just a question of when exactly.

Hi Jim,

It's difficult to say for sure when lac seul will be accessible via Lost Lake or Deception launch. I'd guess sometime next week but hard to guess what day exactly at this point. Have a great trip.
